PC – polycarbonate
PC is an amorphous material, which is used without special modifications. It has a good stiffness, a big impact strength and is used as windows for cabs and for protection against theft in stores, museums etc. As semi-finished products, PC is mostly known as sheets with a very high impact strength. The sheets are supplied up to and including 15 mm thickness in optic quality with smooth, transparent surface. These sheets are partially UV-resistant. Over 15 mm thickness and in pipes and bars, the material is found as technical PC, which is slightly transparent. This is not UV-resistant. PC is often used for injection molded parts.
Application
PC is used in a wide temperature area, but continuous use in hot water over 60°C is not recommended, as there will be hydrolysis. Effect of solvents will cause stress corrosion cracking. PC that can be cold bended up to 5 mm, is used where there are demands for high impact strength. For example in connection with security guards etc. PC is suitable for hot bending and is used for cabinets and displays. For general outdoor use, plates with extra UV protection can be provided.
