PET – polyethylenterephtalat
PET is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a good combination of mechanic, thermal and electrical qualities, which means that it can be used very widely. PET semi-finished is manufactured by extruding in sheets, bars and hollow bars. The material is delivered in a white nature color, but it can also be found in black and as reinforced with fiberglass.
PET is known by it´s great strength and stiffness, but poor impact strength. It is dimension stable, has a low water absorption, but with prolonged exposure to, or use in hot water over approx. 70°C, may cause hydrolysis. Therefore PET is used besides mechanical construction, typically where the plastics are relative highly loaded components. Often in combination with demands of big dimensional accuracy, wear resistance and low friction. PET are also found with glidant (self-lubricating, PET GL, TX etc.) which reduces the friction and increases the wear resistance.
In the same family, you can find PETG (an amorphous-type), which is delivered in clear and opal sheets with high impact roughness and can be thermos molded. PETG is often used to foreclosure, containers etc. in the food industry. PETG does not tolerate UV-light.
Application
PET is used widely inside the electronic industry and when PET/PETG are FDA-approved, the food industry are big consumers. It is due to its environmental friendliness widely used for packaging and bottles (PET), among other things as replacement for PVC.
