PMMA – polymethylmethacrylate (acrylic, Plexiglas)
PMMA is an amorphous material, which largely can be used where previously used glass. In industry mainly used the clear and the smoked plate, while the opal white and the many different colored sheets particularly apply in the design and advertising industry. PMMA sheet is best known in the extruded version, as they have the finest tolerance. Molded sheets have the advantage that they can be manufactured in thicker versions and in blocks. PMMA is also produced in tubes and rods, as there are several grades with special properties.
PMMA is UV-resistant and have good light transmission. The material has high rigidity and a nice surface gloss. The impact strength is 6-8 times as strong as glass, but the surface is not as hard and will therefore be more susceptible to scratches. PMMA is a very notch sensitive material, which should be taken into account in connection with mechanical processing. PMMA is suitable for hot forming, bending over the heating wire and bonding.
Using PMMA is often used for shielding, cabinets and removable windows and other places where the weight reasons can advantageously replace the glass with acrylic. For illuminated signs, displays and decorations PMMA is a widely used material. The possibilities are almost endless, both in terms of colors and shapes.
